Either an extension or a conservatory is a viable option, but conservatories are known for being cold in the winter and too hot in the summer. This can be improved with climate glazing. The glazing repels the heat in the summer and retains the heat in the winter. Due to the amount of glass in a conservatory they will always be much warmer than an extension in the summer as the glazing can only do so much.

A conservatory is much more pleasant when used as a garden room if you are looking for somewhere to sit and enjoy the garden views. In the winter they are not as enjoyable when the weather is bad. If you are looking for a much more practical space, an extension would be best as you gain the usable wall space where you can fit furniture up against. An extension can be enjoyed all year round. When deciding between a conservatory and an extension you need to consider what the space will predominantly be used for.

Here are a few key points to consider:

  • What will the extra space be used for?
  • The location of the extra space. Where on the property is it being added. A conservatory might look odd if it can be seen from the front of the house.
  • The costs. It’s important to choose what suits your budget and matches your requirements. An extension is likely to be more expensive than a basic conservatory, but when upgrading the glazing this can add much more to conservatories. Why not obtain an estimate for both before making your decision?
  • Consider which will look better and suit the style of your house.
  • Day light. If an extension will be added onto a room where the loss of a window or doors is likely then you may lose light into the existing room with an extension. If this is going to be an issue, then maybe a conservatory would suit you best. However, there are sky lights and Velux windows that can be used to help natural light through extension roofs.
  • What are your surroundings? If you have many trees around this might affect how clean the glass is kept on a conservatory roof. The sap, leaves and twigs could cause high maintenance in keeping the glass clean.
